Gallbladder Disease:

Gallbladder disease is an extremely common health problem in the world today. Approximately 500,000 gallbladders are removed each year in the United States alone. The gallbladder is not a necessary organ. Like the appendix, it can often cause trouble.

Gallbladder disease is often associated with gallstones, but not all gallstones cause problems. In addition, sometimes the gallbladder simply does not work well and this can lead to disabling symptoms.

In general, a diseased gallbladder is treated by its removal. This can usually be done laparoscopically (small video camera) with small incisions to allow for a quick recovery. Most patients can resume a completely normal lifestyle postoperatively and can tolerate any foods that they wish.

Dr. Heiser will be happy to discuss your symptoms and x-ray findings with you preoperatively and give you his best determination as to whether gallbladder surgery might help to alleviate your symptoms. Information about the chances of completing the surgery laparoscopically, as well as complications, will always be discussed very thoroughly.
